Three dead following two serious car accidents in past week

Two serious accidents in the past week resulted in three people being fatally injured and another two seriously injured.

The Illinois State Police reported that on Jan. 13, around 7:28 a.m., there was a two vehicle crash on State Route 13, approximately half a mile south of State Route 156 (in the area of the Kaskaskia Bridge by New Athens).

They noted that Charles Wisely, 74, of Columbia, was driving a 2002 Buick LeSabre southeast on State Route 13, while Eddie Lepes, 41, of Marissa, in a 2011 Kia Forte, was traveling northwest in the same location.

Wisely reportedly ran off the road to the right, over corrected and crossed back across the south lane and center line, striking Lepes’ vehicle head on in the northbound lane.

Wisely was pronounced decease on the scene by the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office. His passenger, Debra Waterland, 71, of Wheaton, was flown to a regional hospital with what was reported as life threatening injuries.
