Suspect fatally shot after string of incidents

A lengthy string of incidents across Randolph County in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 23 resulted in an exchange of gunfire that left a Red Bud Police officer injured and a suspect deceased.

The initial incident report released by Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff noted that the State Police was “investigating an officer involved shooting in Red Bud.”

He added that around 1:38 a.m. that morning a call of shots fired was received near the intersection of State Route 3 (Market Street) and Clarence Drive, on the west end of Red Bud.

“A preliminary investigation has revealed a Red Bud Police officer was shot by an unidentified male suspect. The officer was transported to a St. Louis area hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has been discharged. During the incident, a second Red Bud officer discharged a firearm, which resulted in the death of the suspect.”

Due to being an active crime scene, that section of State Route 3 was closed while the Illinois State Police conducted their investigation. The road was reopened around 11:28 a.m.

Additional information about what happened in those early morning hours, and the names of those involved, was released at a press conference held at the Randolph County Courthouse on the afternoon of May 24.
