A special use application for a business outside of Sparta received a considerable amount of discussion at the Sept. 17 Randolph County Board of Commissioners meeting.
It was noted that the special use application was for Kevin Underwood for his company Underwood Ammo. He is wanting to have an ammunition manufacturing facility in an area that is zoned agricultural.
Underwood explained that his home based business has grown substantially over the past few years. “I can’t fit it in the house any more.” He added that they are now selling ammunition all over the country, as well as some internationally.
Underwood Ammo Vice President Derek Hightower added that they employ 25 to 30 people. “We’re very excited about this opportunity. We have expanded and want to continue to grow.”
However, neighboring property owner Marvin Dudenbostel told the commissioners that he had concerns.
