On July 1, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release about charges filed for an incident involving an assault on correctional officers.
The press release noted that on June 15 around 6 p.m., “correctional officers at the Monroe County Jail were conducting routine cell checks when a correctional officer observed an inmate lying unresponsive on the floor of his cell. The officer immediately alerted fellow correctional officers and dispatch to the situation.
“Upon entering the cell to render aid, the officer was suddenly attacked by the inmate, who had deliberately staged the medical emergency to lure staff into the cell. Despite the surprise assault, the officer was able to restrain the inmate until additional assistance arrived and assisted in securing the situation.
