HOMETOWN HERO–A banner honoring local veteran Elroy Scheffert is currently on display across the street from the Red Bud VFW Post. Pictured with the banner are: his daughter Janel Kassing, wife Darleen Scheffert, son Mark Scheffert and daughter Vickie Heller.
The latest Hometown Hero featured by the Red Bud VFW Post 6632 is Elroy Scheffert.
A graduate of Red Bud High School during World War II, Scheffert enlisted into the United States Army on July 26, 1944 and was in Germany by Christmas that year. He was active duty from Sept. 8, 1944 to Nov. 23, 1946.
Because Scheffert spoke German so well, he was an interpreter and was often sent behind the German lines. He was wounded in the knee by American artillery while behind the German lines.
For more information on Scheffert, please see this week’s print edition.
