ADVANCED TO STATE FINALS–This past fall, local cowgirl Annika Olson has ranked in the top five for the state in her two rodeo events. She will compete in the Illinois High School Rodeo Association state finals this June. Olson is pictured with her horse Chika competing in the pole bending event. Photo by Rebecca Miklavic.
Illinois is not well known for a rodeo atmosphere. Yet, Illinois High School Rodeo Association hosts a rodeo circuit throughout the state for over 200 junior high and high school kids.
During the fall season, a local cowgirl proved herself to be a top contender in two events: barrel racing and pole bending.
Annika Olson, a Red Bud High School senior from Monroe County, earned points at several rodeos in the fall. Points are earned by finishing in the top 10 for an event.
