Musketeers outlast Oilers; advance to playoffs

by Brian Magee

Red Bud finished the 2024 regular season in fine fashion with a win over the East Alton Wood River Oilers on Senior Night last Friday in Red Bud.

The Musketeers scored early and often, taking the opening kick off and moving the ball to their own 40 yard line. Just when it seemed that the Oilers had stopped Red Bud, Quarterback Dylan Oliver dropped back to pass on a 3 and 11 and, avoiding a sac, scrambled to break free for a 60 yard touchdown run. Brayden Koester was good for the PAT to give the Musketeers an early 7-0 lead.

Wood River received the kick off after the score and moved the ball to the Musketeer 15. Facing a fourth and 3, the Oilers’ quarterback stepped back to pass, but was sacked by defensive tackle Danny Jackson for a big loss. The stop gave Red Bud the ball and a chance to expand their lead, which they did. The Musketeers took over possession at their own 30 yard line and methodically moved the ball to the Wood River red zone where Oliver found Brayden Schlesinger in the endzone for a 9 yard touchdown strike. The PAT made it 14-0.
