Planning ahead for the jail expansion project was done at the Oct. 11 Randolph County Board of Commissioners meeting.
It had been announced earlier this year that the county was receiving a grant for $4.3 million for renovations and expansion at the jail. The proposed work would renovate the 50 year old county jail and add a new cell block. In addition, the intake/ receiving area will be updated, life-safety improvements will be made, they will add an additional day room, and the current administration office will be updated.
The grant is a Byrne Discretionary Community Project Grant and is funded through Congressional directed spending through the Department of Justice. And it came with a time line of around a year to complete.
