HONORING OUR VETERANS–The Village of Evansville and the Evansville American Legion were very happy to dedicate the new Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday, May 24. Pictured are people checking out the memorial following the dedication and Memorial Day service. Each of the colored pavers features a name of a veteran, and the plaque by the fountain states “This water flows in honor of all veterans, past and present.”
Quite a crowd gathered along the riverfront in Evansville on Sunday, May 24 for a Memorial Day ceremony and the dedication of the new Veterans Memorial Park.
Village President Kenny Kempfer welcomed all in attendance and highlighted the process of creating the park.
Around two years ago, Erwin “Red” Becker went to the village board and asked if it would be possible to put up a flag pole and brass plaque to honor veterans in the empty lot by the Kaskaskia River at the corner of Jefferson and Liberty Streets.
Since then, the simple flag pole and plaque evolved into something more. A committee was formed between the Evansville American Legion and the village, and they began to plan out a few more things for the memorial park.
