A possible change to the county’s public defender position was discussed at the Sept. 25 Randolph County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Randolph County Judge Jeremy Walker was on hand to discuss the changes. He noted that the state passed a law last year that would change the public defender system.
Public defenders had always been chosen, or selected, locally; however, effective on Jan. 1 that will no longer be the case. The state would be taking over the process. Current public defenders will be grandfathered in, but if any need to be replaced, the state will select the replacement.
