A pair of young women that would have been starting their senior year at Trico High School this fall were fatally injured in a car accident on Aug. 1.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on Aug. 1 around 9:23 a.m., Kennedy Anderson, 17, of Ava, was driving a 2003 Kia east on Wine Hill Road. Approximately 500 feet west of Shiloh Hill Road (Campbell Hill area), the vehicle exited the left side of the roadway, overturning and striking a utility pole.
Kennedy, and her passenger, Staci Harsy, 17, of Ava, were both fatally injured in the crash.
A candlelight vigil for the pair was held at Trico on the evening of Aug. 2 and a funeral service was also held at the school on Aug. 4 with Superintendent Larry Lovel officiating.
In a press release on Aug. 3, Randolph County Coroner Carlos Barbour noted that a 55 year old man from Granite City, working for Merlin Stelzer, a sub-contractor of Fager McGee Commercial Construction, Inc., was fatally injured in an accident related to the demolition of the administration building at Menard Correctional Center on Aug. 2.
Barbour noted that the man was pronounced deceased at the correctional center by medical staff.
The deceased’s name was not included in the release, but Merlin Stelzer noted on their Facebook page on Aug. 3 that the deceased was Ronald Pointer. They stated in their post, “This week we lost one of our own, Ron Pointer. He was loved by everyone during his 30+ year career with Merlin Stelzer Services. Ron was a seasoned professional concrete cutter with our services division. Ron was highly respected, loved, and one of the nicest people you could meet.”
Barbour stated that the incident did not involve any correctional staff or offenders, and did not compromise security.
Details of the accident have not been released, but Pointer’s death is being investigated by the coroner’s office, Menard Correctional Center and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Services for Pointer were held in Granite City on Aug. 6.
