The Musketeers took on conference opponent Valmeyer Pirates at home on Jan. 4. The Musketeers had lost their previous matchup by nine points to the Pirates and were hoping to get their season back on track with a win in a very winnable game.
The Musketeers came out very strong to start the game. Jayden Birkner started off the scoring with a put back tip in off of his own miss for two points. Carter Wiegard and Alex Kueker both added five points each in the quarter, both hitting a 3-pointer. The defense was playing very strong. They were guarding their man with aggression and were corralling a majority of the defensive rebounds. The quarter ended with a 14-6 lead favoring the Musketeers.
The scoring dramatically slowed down for the Musketeers in the second quarter as the shots they were hitting in the first were not falling now. The team only managed seven points the entire quarter. Fortunately, the defense remained stout. They continued controlling the defensive glass and staying between their man and the basket. The score at the break was 21-14, Musketeers.
