Trent Sternberg of Red Bud competed in the Illinois Elks Hoop Shoot free throw contest in Decatur on Feb. 24.
He had previously won the Red Bud Elementary contest, Murphysboro Elks local contest, and the Anna-Johnsboro Elks district contest. At the state level, Sternberg competed against seven others shooters aged 10 and 11 from across the state.
At Saturday’s contest, Sternberg made 7 of 10 of his free throws in the first round of play. In the second round, Sternberg made 14 of his 15 free throws for a total of 21 of 25 free throws.
He won the first place championship at the state level.
Sternberg will now represent Illinois and shoot at the Elks regional contest in Iowa City, IA on March 10. He will compete against the state winners from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
He is the son of Chris and Hilary Sternberg of Red Bud.
