Many officials gathered at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta on May 7 for a press conference as it was announced there would be a memorandum of understanding signed between Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
As part of his priorities in his “Eight for ‘18 Agenda,” State Senator Paul Schimpf is working with both SIUC and IDNR to carry out strategic planning studies on the future economic vitality of the World Shooting and Recreational Complex and Pyramid State Park in Perry County, which are both IDNR sites.
Schimpf stated, “These studies will help to maximize their potential.” The studies will help plan for the future of both sites, helping them to become better economic engines for southern Illinois. “It is an absolute win-win for everyone.”
IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal added that the studies will help them find better ways to use both the shooting complex and Pyramid State Park. In addition, it will help create more awareness of both facilities. “We need to continue to look at the possibilities and open them up.”
