SISAA held teen summit in Sparta

ATTEND TEEN SUMMIT–Representing Red Bud High School at the Southern Illinois Substance Abuse Alliance’s teen summit in Sparta last week were: Emma Roscow, Abby Wolter and Kailyn Moeller.

Last week, around 40 students and adult sponsors from seven area high schools attended a teen summit event in Sparta.

Put on by the Southern Illinois Substance Abuse Alliance (SISAA), the event was held on Sept. 30 at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex. Attending schools were: Chester, Coulterville, Okawville, Mater Dei, Red Bud, Sparta and Waterloo.

SISAA Youth Prevention Coordinator Dennis Trask noted that each school is at a different point in developing or implementing their drug prevention programs, so this summit was a way for SISAA to “encourage and provide support to prevent drug use” where each is at.

Trask added that SISAA has three strategies they are focusing on: communication with parents; prevention lessons at the schools; and promoting positive peer to peer messages.

The participating student leaders were tasked with developing plans that they could implement at their respective schools.

Red Bud High School had three students attending the teen summit in Sparta: Abby Wolter, Kailyn Moeller and Emma Roscow. Moeller and Roscow had both attended the CGTI event over the summer.
