Shooting in Sparta leads to two arrests

Daniel Doyle

A demolition derby on Friday night was supposed to be part of the weekend of fun out at the fairgrounds in Sparta, but an incident involving a gun took place that evening.

According to Randolph County State’s Attorney Jeremy Walker, following the demo derby there was an altercation where Daniel Doyle, 45, of Sparta, discharged a pistol multiple times. In addition to accidently shooting himself in the hand, he shot Victor L. Whaley, Jr. twice in the abdomen.

Whaley was taken to Sparta Community Hospital and then airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of his injuries, but was reported to have been released later that night.

Doyle was arrested and has been charged with armed violence and aggravated battery.

His daughter, Katey J. Doyle, 19, of Sparta, was also arrested for obstruction of justice by trying to conceal evidence, and possession of a weapon by a felon.
