New head coach for softball team; Season opens this week

This week marks the opening of the 2019 softball season at Red Bud High School. This year’s team includes six seniors who will be under the leadership of a new head coach, Kevin Cartee.

Cartee is in his 12th year as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at the high school. He replaces last year’s coach Jamie Corbier, whose team finished the season 17-11 and second in the conference (9-2).

Upon graduation from SIUE in 1985, Cartee taught at Hazelwood High School in 1988, serving as assistant baseball and softball coach. In 1992 he served as head softball coach before leaving for East Alton-Wood River. Here he served as a teacher, dean of students and athletic director. He was an assistant basketball coach for 10 years and assistant baseball coach for four years. Cartee has coached Legion baseball as well.

Cartee was named Illinois Athletic Director of the year for Class 1A-2A in 2016.

“I feel the strength of the program will be its offensive ability. I think we can score some runs this season. Several younger players will have to step up and pick up for the large loss of graduating seniors,” said Coach Cartee.
