Lock is closing for historic dewatering

Work at the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (Kaskaskia) is continuing and the dewatering of the lock chamber will result in reduced hours of operation and lock closures.

From July 31 through Aug. 5, the lock will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to all traffic. The lock will be available from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

From Aug. 6-26, the lock will be closed 24 hours to all traffic.

Recreation boaters are encouraged to plan accordingly as access to and from the Mississippi River will be limited through late August when the maintenance will be completed. The upstream and downstream boat ramps will not be affected and will remain available for river access.

The dewatering of the lock chamber in August will be the first in the project’s history, allowing inspections of the structure and critical repairs to be completed.
