Local communities reflect and show respect on Memorial Day

WHITE TABLE DISPLAY–Eva Kinney, retired Navy Commander Maureen Liefer and Megan Schoenherr are pictured showing their respects to the POW/MIA White Table display after setting it up during the Red Bud Memorial Day ceremony.

Memorial Day was Monday, May 28 and some very meaningful ceremonies were held across the local area over the weekend in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our country.

The Evansville American Legion held their service on Sunday, with a focus on honoring five local men who lost their lives during the Vietnam War: Steve Moll, Frank Steibel, Leon Buehler, Leonard Nitzche and Charles Rader.

Legion Commander Ty Becker noted that last year was the official 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, but he wanted to take time to recognize these men and their service.

Becker himself had served in that war, arriving in Vietnam on Aug. 23, 1968. He added that he was in a sister company to the one that Nitzche served in. “We trod in many of the same areas that he did.”
