Hazel and Helen Hess both earned gold medals in tumbling at the 2018 Amateur Athletic Association of the United States, Inc. (AAU) Junior Olympic Games held in Des Moines, Iowa.
Hazel competed at the sub-beginner level and Helen competed at the intermediate level during the four-day meet held July 26-29. Helen and Hazel placed first in both their preliminaries and finals to win their national championships.
Helen is a third-year member and Hazel is a first-year member of the tumbling team at PowerHaus Gym in Columbia.
During the 2017-2018 season, Helen competed at the novice level before advancing to the intermediate level. Highlights of Helen’s season include a second place finish at the United States Trampoline and Tumbling (USTA) Southern Illinois State Meet in April, as well as a district championship at the AAU Ozark District Meet in April.
Hazel competed as a sub-beginner all season, placing third at the AAU District Meet and 14th place at the USTA State Meet.
