Healthy Circle held dedication ceremony

GRAND UNVEILING–Red Bud Regional’s Healthy Circle Advisor Julie Hudson, along with members Ralph Chapman and Bill James are pictured unveiling the new monument at Red Bud’s Old City Cemetery during a ceremony last Saturday morning.

Members of the community, city leaders and local Girl Scouts gathered at Red Bud’s Old City Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 10 as the Red Bud Regional Hospital Healthy Circle organization dedicated a monument as the final phase of their restoration efforts at the site.

A blessing of the stone and cemetery was given by Pastor Russell Koen of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Bud.

Giving the history of the events that led up to the event, Healthy Circle Advisor Julie Hudson, told the crowd that what began as a simple clean-up day at the cemetery back in May 2010 by the Healthy Circle, quickly turned to the group adopting the grounds and becoming honorary caretakers. On the last Saturday of each month, members would meet to trim weeds, pull brush and give it a general cleaning. The group also got busy raising funds for the project including selling raffle tickets for hand-made quilts they produced each year, bake sales, craft sales and even hosting a barbecue on the hospital’s front lawn. In total, including private donations and a grant from the Red Bud VFW, the Healthy Circle organization raised over $18,000 for the project.
