Former Red Bud woman giving the gift of life to her young nephew

Cheryl (Laurent) Steiner with nephew Mason Steiner

On Jan. 31, a former Red Bud woman will be giving her 2 year old nephew an amazing gift that will transform his life – one of her kidneys.

Cheryl (Laurent) Steiner recently spoke to the North County News about her upcoming lifesaving donation.

Cheryl is the daughter of Sharon Greten and was a 1997 graduate of Red Bud High School. She currently is married to Joe Steiner and they live in East Lynn, which is about an hour northeast of Champaign, with their two children Ethan and Abby.

East Lynn is a small community and Cheryl’s family lives just a few doors down from Joe’s brother, Karl, and his family. Karl Steiner and his wife Holly have two children, William and Mason.

Mason is the one that will be receiving a kidney from Cheryl.

In a news release that explained Mason’s condition, it was noted that while Holly was pregnant with Mason, an ultrasound showed that he had a kidney abnormality. At first the doctor thought it may have been polycystic kidney disease, but specialist disagreed.
