Difficult start for the young Musketeers

by Jayden Birkner

The 2018-19 Musketeer Basketball Season started at the Trico/Murphysboro Tournament. The team has drastically changed from the previous year. They lost seven seniors and only return three varsity players in Carter Wiegard, Alex Kueker, and Jayden Birkner. The Musketeers had one of the most successful seasons in a long time last year as they won a share of their conference and went well over .500. With a young core, the team hopes to carry on the success from last year.

Going into the tournament, the Musketeers knew they would have a large task at hand, playing five games in six days. They were without junior guard Alex Kueker, who has been out the past few weeks with a fractured wrist. The first night of action was not how the team wanted to start their year.

They faced off against the hosts of the tournament, the Trico Pioneers. The first half the Musketeers did not come out ready to play and did not handle the physicality of the Pioneers well. They went down 23-10 after the first quarter. Carter Wiegard hit two 3-point shots and Jayden Birkner put in two 2-point shots.

The second quarter the Musketeers played better defense, only allowing nine points, however only scoring four for themselves, which put them down 32-14 at half.
