RBHS runners punched their tickets for Saturday’s IHSA Sectional Cross Country meet in Benton.
The Red Bud boys team “put it all together” at Saturday’s IHSA Regional meet at Carterville. Running as a tight “pack” behind senior Wyatt DuClos, the Musketeers maintained a very disciplined pace. The time difference between first and fifth runners (i.e., the 1-5 split) was an amazing 29 seconds on the 3.05 mile course, an eye-opening improvement over their previous best effort. DuClos placed 16th at 17:54, a 5:52 pace per mile. Garrett Headen, now apparently recovered from surgery, was only a few seconds back, then the trio of Alex Sievers, Edward Miller, and Josh Birke entered the finish chute almost in unison.
Peaking as a team allowed them to avenge early season losses to several teams and put them in the thick of the team battle. Compared to their effort on the same course three weeks earlier (Carterville Invitational), the Red Bud team improved its total time by almost five minutes, nearly a full minute per runner.
