Cowell named Player of the Year

While the 2017 volleyball season is now history, the accolades for senior outside hitter Morgan Cowell continue. Cowell was recently named the Belleville News-Democrat Class 1A-2A Player of the Year.

The Red Bud team finished a successful season with a record of 22-13-1, as well as the Class 2A Sparta Regional championship and the Cahokia Conference (Kaskaskia Division) championship.

A four year varsity starter, Cowell set goals in this her senior year. She explained she wanted to acheive as much as possible in her last year at Red Bud High School.

I wanted to win conference and also wanted us to win the regional and make it further than we did my junior year. We accomplished multiple goals such as winning games over .500 and taking the conference and regional title. Although we lost in the semi final game against Wesclin, it was a hard fought battle,” she stated.

Cowell attributes the team’s success to chemistry.

There were eight of us seniors and while most people think that we would have a hard time getting along, you’re wrong. I can’t even explain how close we were as a team on and off the court. We have all grown up together and most of us have played together since grade school. The bond was unbreakable and there was never any drama. We truly were a family and leaned on each other in games when we need it,” she said.
