City council questions a few of their bills

A few of the city’s bills were questioned at Monday night’s Red Bud city council meeting.

Topping the discussion were recent purchases made by the fire department. Alderman Bill Hanebutt commented that several of the bills from the fire department were regular maintenance items, but in the past month the department had also purchased 10 pagers, three Samsung Galaxy tablets, some Under Armour gear and a clothes dryer.

What controls are there on what they can spend and should they get approval first?” questioned Hanebutt, adding that the fire department spent around $7,000 for these purchases. “We need to work on controls for spending.”

He also noted that city hall employees or the police department can’t just go out and buy a computer or spend this much on equipment without approval first. He suggested that they have the fire department explain these bills.

Alderman Kyle Donjon pointed out that the fire department did have money for these items in their budget.

Mayor Tim Lowry told the council that they will be holding their annual budget meeting this month and this would be one of the subjects of discussion at that meeting.
